What Exactly Is the 2012 Olympic Legacy?! (Taken from www.cutthechat.co.uk)
London’s bid for the 2012 Olympics was centred around the legacy the games would leave behind. It was that which won them the games. It was that focus on changing the long term lives of many Londoners which got one up over Paris.
So what does this legacy involve? New trains? More buses? More ‘Boris Bikes’? New colourful buildings? Does anybody really know what the Olympic committee meant when they used the word legacy. Sure they’ve invested a bit of money into schemes here and there, mainly around the Stratford area. However there are still many areas in London that won’t benefit from this ‘legacy’ the Olympic committee have waxed lyrical about.
There are many Olympic sites which may end up becoming surplus to requirements. It happens wherever the Olympics go. The games are definitely an amazing experience. A once in a lifetime opportunity which no city should pass up on. However they do have negative aspects. It’s sort of like that relative or family friend that comes to spend time with you, and you have to accommodate all their requirements at your expense. Governments will pump millions into the game in the hope of multiple economic gains. However these returns don’t always pan out. Look at Greece for example. Athens hosted the Olympics only 8 years ago. After the games, there were multiple Olympic sites which became barren and unused. Look at Greece today. stuck in one of the biggest economic meltdowns in recent memory. So bad it’s having serious implications on the rest of the continent.
I don’t think London will fare as badly as Athens, but I certainly think this notion of an Olympic legacy is similar to when MNEs (Multi-National Enterprises) do their “bit for the community”. Build a few houses, build a few youth centres, build a new train station and call it a legacy. Mama didn’t raise no fool!
